24 Best Spas In America
National Geographic Traveler
Just a 20-minute drive from downtown San Francisco, this 22-acre getaway has casually elegant guest rooms with marble bathrooms and whirlpool tubs. Some rooms overlook the city and bay; others have views of the Berkeley hills and eucalyptus groves. Added in '89, the 7,500-square-foot spa spotlights mind-body health with a full menu of "mindful fitness" classes. "Claremont's 'movement therapy' classes - such as restorative yoga - are some of the best around," says Pamela Peeke. There's also aerobics (in the pool and out), personalized fitness training, and an array of treatments, including kurs (herbal baths) and algae masks. Jordan's restaurant features California cuisine (Monterey prawns, Napa cheese, herbs from the resort's garden), while the restaurant's "lifestyle cuisine" has an Asian flair. Telling details: heated aromatherapy neck pillow used during manicures and pedicures; a scented pillow shields eyes during massage. The ultimate: The Head-to-Toe treatment: facial, massage, manicure and pedicure. Bottom line: "Truly tops for mind-body programs," reports Margaret Pierpont.

The Spa Who Loved Me

Spa with a city view; city with a spa view: Not only does the grand, 83-year-old Claremont Resort have a view of San Francisco-but much of the Bay Area has a view of the Claremont. It's that rambling, white luxury hotel dominating the Oakland/Berkeley hills. The busy spa-overlooking the hotel garden and tennis courts- is full of clients disappearing into treatment rooms for massage, hydrotherapy, hydrating oil wraps. Platters of fresh fruit and drinks are laid out in the cushy waiting rooms. Guests can also make use of two large swimming pools, an outdoor whirlpool, and a large fitness center.
